A market town at the time of the Domesday book, Frome was also a prosperous town during the middle ages as a centre for the wool and cloth trade. The town was founded in 685 AD by the abbot of Malmesbury, reputedly on the site of the church of St John in the town centre.
With more listed buildings than any other town in Somerset, Frome is a pleasing environment of independent shops and café's with cobbled streets and interesting architecture.
Frome is also a thriving community of artists, musicians and craftspeople. Each year this is celebrated in the Frome festival in early July (www.fromefestival.co.uk). See the images on the right, in clockwise order they are - The Blue House, The Museum and Frome's Annual Festival.
The town is well located for visits to Longleat, Stourhead to the south, Bath just north and Stonehenge to the east.
